WELCOME
The Victoria Voltigeurs Institute focuses on evidence-based education, research, artistic offerings, presentations and academic publications.
We highlight Nicholas Auger, Jean Baptiste Jollibois, and John Lemon, and their legacy as members of the Victoria Voltigeurs, the mobile police force of Métis militia. All three were hand-picked by Sir James Douglas.
With Nicholas Auger, Jean Baptiste Jollibois, and John Lemon's appointments to the Victoria Voltigeurs, they relocated to Colquitz Creek, near its junction with Swan creek, also referred to as "Potage Inlet". Together, with the other Victoria Voltigeurs and their families, they formed a small village of mostly First Nations women and Métis men, on the unceded territories of the Songhees.
We recognize and value all of the Victoria Voltigeurs that served alongside these Métis men. As the Victoria Voltigeurs Institute grows, so will the resources in honouring all of the Victoria Voltigeurs.
